A “Safe Use of Chemicals” course cover hazard identification, risk assessment, safe handling and storage procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response, and relevant legislation. It will also teach how to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and properly label containers.
Course content
1. Introduction to Chemical Safety: What are Chemicals? Understanding different types of chemicals and their physical forms. Chemical Hazards: Learning about the various hazards associated with chemicals, including physical, health, and environmental hazards. Routes of Exposure: Understanding how chemicals can enter the body (inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, injection). Health Effects: Learning about the potential health effects of chemical exposure.
2. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS): How to read and interpret SDS to identify chemical hazards and safe handling procedures. Chemical Labels: Understanding chemical labels, pictograms, and hazard warnings. Risk Assessment: Identifying potential hazards in the workplace and assessing the risks associated with them. Control Measures: Learning about different control measures to eliminate or minimize chemical hazards, such as substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE.
3. Safe Handling, Storage, and Transportation: Proper Handling Techniques: Learning safe techniques for handling chemicals, including pouring, mixing, and dispensing. Storage Requirements: Understanding proper storage conditions for different types of chemicals, including segregation of incompatible substances. Transportation Procedures: Learning how to transport chemicals safely, including the use of appropriate containers and equipment. Waste Disposal: Understanding proper procedures for disposing of chemical waste.
4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Selection and Use: Learning how to select the appropriate PPE for different tasks and how to use it correctly. PPE Inspection: Learning how to inspect PPE for damage and ensure it is in good working condition.
5. Emergency Response: Spill Management: Learning how to respond to chemical spills and leaks, including containment and cleanup procedures. First Aid: Understanding basic first aid procedures for chemical exposure. Emergency Procedures: Learning about emergency procedures for chemical accidents and incidents.
